Twenty-One—Violet

During the last few years of my ballet training, I’d taken class six days a week, on top of school. So that was probably why I walked over to the barre studio feeling so smug. Irma needed a favour, and I’d be able to knock it out easily before getting on with the rest of my day.

“Hey there!” the woman at the desk called out. She had lip-gloss as shiny as turtle wax, topping off a monochromatic ensemble of leggings and bra-top. Baby blue.

“Hi,” I said, feeling awkward already. “I’d like to sign up for a class.”

“For sure!” she said. “Just fill this out. Your first three classes are on the house!”

“Thanks.” I scanned the forms. Lots of detail about things I couldn’t sue them for later.

“Super!” the woman said when I was done. “There’s a dressing room if you want to change, and here’s a free water bottle.” She shoved it across the desk at me. It said BARRE BUDDIES in a funky cursive script, with a happy face dotting the I. It was put together like a sippy cup, with a rigid lid and a straw jammed into it that looked like a unicorn’s horn.

“Thanks,” I said, picking it up and heading to the water fountain. I had nothing to change into, but I tried not to let it bother me; I was wearing a t-shirt with yoga capris and sneakers. I’d just do class barefoot and go home and take a shower afterwards.

I filled my purple unicorn water bottle while I waited for class to start. Geraldine, Irma’s friend, plopped down beside me, and I felt better about things. She was sixty-something, a grandmother. If she could do this class, I was going to be fine.

“Hello, Violet,” she said, smiling at me.

“Hey, Geraldine.”

“I heard you and Irma discovered a burning car last night. Is that true?”

“Yeah, it was really terrible.”

“Who was in the car?”

I paused. Geraldine looked a lot like somebody’s granny, but the tone in her voice sounded like Irma’s when she was trying to find out something she probably shouldn’t know.

“The engineer from the Beaver Brooke ground-breaking,” I said.

“Huh,” she said, chewing on the side of her lip. “What did the police say?”

“I didn’t really speak to them. Just gave a brief statement.”

She seemed unperturbed by my reluctance to give her any details, which also reminded me of Irma. Exactly what kind of retirees populated this island, anyway? Was it some sort of old folks’ getaway for spies?

“What did the car look like?” she persisted.

“Smashed,” I said. Then turned to look at her.

She read something in my eyes and gave me a half-tilt of her head in response. “I heard Irma’s at the clinic.”

I nodded just as a gaggle of skinny spandexed women converged on the room, with perky bra-tops, bright NASA-designed leggings, and bare feet with toenails sporting pale pinks, probably this season’s must-have colour. My nails hadn’t been professionally manicured since that one time in the nineties.
